Catholic Education Commission of WA

The Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia (CECWA) is appointed by the Bishops of Western Australia and remains responsible to them. Under the Terms of Reference of the Commission, issued by the Bishops in 1993, the Commission serves two roles:
  • To develop and evaluate Catholic school policy where the Bishops elect to adopt a joint policy.
  • To act for each diocesan Bishop in specified matters concerning the Catholic schools in his diocese.
These responsibilities of the Commission are exercised through the Catholic Education Office of Western Australia (CEOWA) in Perth and through Regional Offices in Broome, Geraldton and Bunbury.

The Terms of Reference of the Commission specify that in complying with these broad directives the Commission will witness to and proclaim its commitment to Jesus Christ and to the truths and values of God's Kingdom; operate in accord with the principle of subsidiarity; and keep itself informed of major Church and government statements on education, integrating these into its own activities.

In its wider term of reference of responsibility for Catholic education throughout Western Australia, the Commission continues with a long-standing endeavour to ensure Catholic education is available to all children of Catholic parents who seek such an education for their children.

COMMISSION MEMBERSHIP

Commission members are drawn as far as possible from all groups involved in Catholic education. Members serve for a term of up to three years and are eligible for reappointment for a second and third term.
